What inspired you to become a musician?

The first sources of inspiration undoubtedly date back to my teenage years, as a boy I dwelt with great admiration to watch the performances of the singers and orchestras who came to play in the square of my country (Gildone in the province of Campobasso), on the occasion of the summer patronal feasts. Certainly those emotions, have given birth in me the curiosity of wanting to immerse myself in music, then also thanks to the discovery of the great Italian singer-songwriters and the American and English rock-blues repertoire, I felt more and more the need to create something that was mine!

Quanti anni avevi quando hai iniziato a suonare?

How old were you when you started playing (music)?

L’ideale sarebbe iniziare a studiare musica e canto già dalle scuole elementari, (come avviene in molti paesi d’Europa).

I approached concretely the study of guitar around the age of 14, first through private courses, then at the Campobasso Conservatory that I attended until the fifth year. Later I continued my studies at the Conservatory of Benevento, where I graduated in classical guitar under the guidance of M° Raimondo Di Sandro.

The ideal would be to start studying music and singing already from primary schools, (as is the case in many countries of Europe). Children should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential, because instrumental practice contributes to personality formation, stimulates motor functions and greatly promotes interdisciplinary learning processes.

Come descriveresti la tua musica?

How would you describe your music?

In fact, I always start from songs to talk about life and vice versa, in a continuous interchange, sometimes bitter sometimes hilarious. The songs for me represent an outlet valve to tell my little truths of everyday life, guitar and voice are always born.

The guitar is a via, a kind of bridge to infinity!

I often take inspiration from fragments of daily life, readings, films or issues related to current events.

The songs are small containers of emotion and for this reason they must necessarily convey content … each author has the mission of encouraging the opening of imaginary doors, so that the interlocutor can reflect himself and why not in some cases also re-appropriate a part of his identity that he had temporarily set aside!

Where is your ideal place to perform?

I always try to interact with the public in any circumstance, (clubs, breweries, bookstores, historic centers, squares, theaters) of course when the audience is sitting specifically for you is ideal … there is greater attention, which favors a more intimate and emotional approach than other less contextualized events.

Currently, however, the situation is still very precarious due to the anti-Covid restrictions …

Towards the end of the summer we saw a timid recovery, despite the fact that most of the billboards were cancelled. The entertainment world is suffering the greatest setbacks, it is facing an unprecedented crisis that is in serious danger of regressing and will probably be the last to start again …!

During the lockdown period I took the opportunity to experiment with different musical projects online, on my social pages, with excellent feedback … but nevertheless it must be admitted that live contact with the public is definitely incomparable!

What is your favorite song to perform?

More than tell you what my favorite song is… I would propose the one with which I can most entertain the audience, namely “Briciole d’amore“. A song that many sing immediately after listening to the first chorus and often also ask me as an encore!

Quali musicisti famosi ammiri?

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Oltre alla scena pop-rock internazionale, amo molto i cantautori italiani, come ad esempio Fabrizio De Andrè, Ivano Fossati, Edoardo Bennato, Francesco De Gregori, Giorgio Gaber, Lucio Dalla, Francesco Guccini, Antonello Venditti, Lucio Battisti, Riccardo Cocciante, Rino Gaetano, Vasco Rossi, Luciano Ligabue, Zucchero, Raf, Biagio Antonacci, Fabrizio Moro, Tiziano Ferro, Niccolò Fabi, Diodato, Ermal Meta, Simone Cristicchi, Cesare Cremonini, Federico Zampaglione…

In addition to the international pop-rock scene, I love Italian songwriters very much, such as Fabrizio De Andrè, Ivano Fossati, Edoardo Bennato, Francesco De Gregori, Giorgio Gaber, Lucio Dalla, Francesco Guccini, Antonello Venditti, Lucio Battisti, Riccardo Cocciante, Rino Gaetano, Vasco Rossi, Luciano Ligabue, Zucchero, Raf, Biagio Antonacci, Fabrizio Moro, Tiziano Ferro, Niccolò Fabi, Diodato, Ermal Meta, Simone Cristicchi, Cesare Cremonini, Federico Zampaglione…

When you’re in front of these artists, you realize that there’s more to it than knowing how to expertly frame text and music, here and in a few other cases, we can talk about “poems that woo music.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Not to give up in the face of difficulties and at the same time not to proselytise when achieving the objectives set! You have to calmly accept that there is always someone better and be aware that music (apart from Sanremo) is not a race! De Andrè said: “You can’t do a race of feelings, we don’t do gymnastics”.

So the best thing is to stay humble and with your feet pere ground … Then fate shows you the way!

If you could change something about the Music Industry, what would it be?

Music is an essential expressive need, it is made of life, any creative aspect is always dictated by a primordial impulse, maybe for me this impulse turns into music, for someone else in a painting, a sculpture or a novel … Music is an integral part of culture and culture helps to form a historical consciousness. The moment you have a historical conscience, you have an extra weapon to defend yourself and better understand your surroundings.

Music in Italy should be a little more protected by Radio, let’s remember that the Italian song has very deep roots. The first artist in history to win a Grammy was Domenico Modugno in the 59th minute…

We must not always be dazzled by everything that comes from abroad or by the power lobbies that command and bombard us with the usual 10 songs! So I would give more space to emerging Italian music in Radio and less power to the monopoly of Talent Shows on TV …

What is a message you would like to give to your fans?

One thing I would certainly say is that approaching music only with the ambition to break through would be a very serious mistake! A bit like getting closer to the game of football with the sole claim to become a famous superstar! Music must first of all be a means of expressing itself while having fun. Dreams are the engine of life, but it is also necessary to study, because only starting from the studio, you can really understand how much music gives back more than what you give it!
